Audi is planning to go full-electric with their R8 offering. The German car manufacturer is aiming for an all-electric Audi R8 launch by 2022. According to Autocar, the introduction of the new R8 electric supercar will mark the end of the V10 engine use, by the brand.
Audi is also reducing the use of V8 in most of its products. The company has already downsized the powertrains of the RS4 and the RS5 models to turbo V6 engines. However, the V8s are still featured on models such as the A6, A7 and the A8 ranges. The V8 engine also powers the SQ7 SUV.
Back in 2015, Audi had showcased a limited-run R8 e-Tron. However senior officials have now stated that the third-generation R8 will be solely powered by an electric drivetrain. The new model will also feature a completely new design compared to the current generation model.
The new Audi R8 e-Tron, once introduced in 2022 will take inspiration from the PB18 e-Tron concept. The concept car showcased at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The PB18 e-Tron Concept uses a triple-motor configuration, producing 775bhp. The concept car also uses a shooting-brake-like rear-end, allowing for improved interior space than the current generation R8. The car also improves the day-to-day usability of the supercar.
Audi has already also stated that ideally the new generation four-wheel-drive, all-electric R8 will come with a top speed of 300km/h and a 0 - 100km/h time of just above 2 seconds. Rumours also suggest that the electric drivetrain on the production-spec model will produce over a 1000bhp.
Audi first launched the R8 in 2005, with the latest update back in 2015. The brand was expected to launch their third-generation model of the R8 soon. However, the 2015 R8 failed to garner the success the first-generation model had, making Audi reconsider their decision.
Audi has plans to create a whole new range of all-electric models. The new Audi R8 will now bring the new R8 under this range, with its expected launch in 2022. The car is expected to bring back the R8 e-Tron name again.
Audi's first all-electric car, however, will be the e-Tron. The five-seater, Q5-sized vehicle is expected to be globally revealed this September. Production of the e-Tron has already started. The company is also expected to launch the e-Tron Sportback and the e-Tron GT, before the introduction of the electric R8.
Thoughts On The All-Electric Audi R8
Audi has plans to position itself as a leader in the electric car market. The company has plans of selling eight lakh electric models by 2025. Audi will also seize the growing interest for electric vehicles in China, which is currently the world's largest car market.
