Volvo XC40 Production Starts; India Launch In 2018
Swedish carmaker Volvo has started production of the India-bound XC40 SUV at its factory in Ghent, Belgium.
Swedish carmaker Volvo has started production of the India-bound XC40 SUV in Belgium. The XC40 which was revealed earlier this year in September is the smallest SUV in Volvo's lineup and is expected to arrive in India in the second half of 2018.
The Volvo XC40 will initially be produced at Volvo's Belgian facility in the city of Ghent which is also responsible for the production of V40 hatchback, S60 sedan and the XC60 SUV.
Speaking at the event to mark the commencement of the production of the XC40 in Ghent, Volvo Cars chief executive and president Håkan Samuelsson said, "This is a proud day for Ghent, the company and all our employees here. Our people have put in long days and many hours to prepare the plant for the start of XC40 production and they have done a great job. The XC40 represents a bright future for Ghent and for Volvo Cars."
The Volvo XC40 is the smallest SUV to bear the Volvo badge and is the first car from the Swedish marque to be based on the firm's new Compact Modular Architecture platform. The platform which was developed by Volvo in collaboration with its parent company Geely Auto will underpin every new car in the new Volvo 40 series lineup.
The new Volvo XC40 which will make its North American debut at next week's LA Auto Show borrows several styling cues found on other new Volvo SUV's including the Swedish company's trademark Thor's Hammer LED headlights, vertically stacked tailights and beefy bumpers.
The new Volvo XC40 will at first be available with either the T5 petrol or D4 diesel engines both of which are 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pots. The XC40 will follow the rest of the Volvo lineup and will feature hybrid and fully electric models in the future.
