Volkswagen Is The First Van Manufacturer To Offer AEB As Standard
Volkswagen has announced that it will make its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems a standard feature across its van fleet, starting from June 1, 2017.
Volkswagen has confirmed that the carmaker will make autonomous emergency braking systems (AEB) a standard feature across its van fleet, starting June 1, 2017.
The Volkswagen Caddy, Crafter, and Transporter will be offered with the AEB system from June 1, 2017. Volkswagen becomes the first commercial vehicle brand to fit AEB in all its vans.

According to Thatcham Research, automotive research centre and respected experts in safety, security and crash repair, autonomous emergency braking systems are one of the most significant developments in vehicle safety since the seat belt. Thatcham believes that AEB could prevent more than 100 fatalities and 120,000 casualties on Britain's roads over the next ten years if AEB is equipped with all new cars and vans.

Volkswagen's autonomous emergency braking tech works by using a radar system built into the front of the van. The Front Assist part operates in two stages and the assistance system warns the driver with audible and visual signals, as well as braking assistance when required.

Peter Shaw, CEO at Thatcham Research, said: "It's shocking that AEB, a proven lifesaving technology, has not been widely available to van owners or drivers until now. We call upon all vehicle manufacturers to follow Volkswagen's lead and fit AEB as standard across all their light commercial vehicles as soon as possible."
