German car manufacturer Volkswagen has partnered with Nvidia for autonomous technology. The automaker has stated that the cars will be equipped with pWLAN (public wireless LAN) technology from 2019.

The pWLAN technology enables the cars and transport infrastructure within 500-metre radius to share information. The vehicles can communicate regarding the warnings, traffic and road conditions.

Initially, the system will be limited to warnings and local information. But in the later stage, the technology can be expanded to bring more features such as real-time traffic status.

The pWLAN technology uses a frequency band which is intended to road safety. The system is localised, so it eliminates the need for data storage or network coverage. Any car fitted with pWLAN can communicate with each other.
