Volkswagen California XXL Concept Is The Ultimate Globetrotting Campervan
Volkswagen has revealed the California XXL, a massive campervan which features an innovative interior and all the latest tech.
Volkswagen has revealed the California XXL concept, which takes its California campervan series to a whole new level for those who prefer to roam the world on four wheels.
The Volkswagen California XXL concept, revealed at this year's Caravan Salon Düsseldorf, sports an interior that maximises usage of space thanks to innovative design and tech.
The VW California XXL is based on Volkswagen's Crafter commercial panel van and is 6.2-metres long thanks to the extended rear section of the van and features up to 6.2-metres (7.2-feet) of standing room which should be enough for most giants.
The exterior design of the California XXL, isn't that great to look at, looking more like a van with a caravan stuck on top. However, the caravan-ish design is there for a reason, which becomes clear once you step inside the van.

The cabin for the driver and front passenger looks like it has been lifted directly from the commercial van it is based on but does feature an infotainment system which along with the white and yellow colour theme and the floor paneling does give it a more upmarket feel.
Behind the driver's cabin is the main living space accessed from the outside by sliding doors on either side of the VW California XXL.
Inside, there is a small table which can be accessed from the front as well, thanks to the swiveling seats. Other features include two gas stoves, a coffee machine, and a small refrigerator.
The bathroom is a retractable unit which slides out from one side of the van and features a shower along with a sink that folds over the loo.
There are two sleeping areas in the VW California XXL. The first is behind the shower and the seating area a looks to be quite large. There are large rectangular windows on either side of the bed which allow light to stream into the van.
The second sleeping area is accessed with the help of a step ladder and lies directly underneath the panoramic glass roof which allows those lying down a brilliant view of the sky above. The roof space surprisingly can accommodate a fully-grown adult, which is not often the case with most camper vans.
There are numerous storage spaces littered everywhere around the van including on the side panels and on the doors, the latter of which are meant for dirty shoes. The rear bootlid lifts up to allow access to the boot and also acts as the storage area for your deck chairs.
The Volkswagen California XXL concept is powered by a 174.5bhp turbodiesel paired to VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
The VW California XXL also sports pneumatic suspension which keeps passengers comfortable and keeps the van aligned horizontally when parked.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The Volkswagen California XXL takes the original VW bus to a whole new level of comfort and should provide enough space for a small globetrotting family out for some adventure.
