Volkswagen Beetle And Passat To Receive New 2.0-Litre TSI Engine
Volkswagen Beetle and Passat to receive 2.0-litre TSI engine. The new engine includes new pistons, a redesigned valvetrain with variable intake valves, and higher pressure fuel injectors.
Soon after it was confirmed that the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan would be equipped with a new 2.0-litre TSI engine, there is confirmation that the same engine will be available in the 2017 Passat and Beetle.
Internally known as the Gen3.B, the new TSI engine debuted in last year's Audi A3 and Audi A4 Ultra and is a development of the company's familiar EA888 unit.

A multitude of mechanical changes separates the Gen3.B from the EA888. The new engine includes new pistons, a redesigned valvetrain with variable intake valves, an 11.7:1 compression ratio and higher pressure fuel injectors. Also, the engine receives additional grunt from a small turbocharger.

The new 2.0-litre TSI unit powering the Tiguan delivers 183bhp and 300Nm of torque. The same figures are expected to be maintained for the new Beetle and the Passat.

This means that the new Beetle and the Passat equipped with the new 2.0-litre TSI engine will receive a power bump of 13bhp and 50Nm of torque than the existing 1.8-litre unit.

Supplementing the boost in power will be increased fuel efficiency with Volkswagen claiming that the Passat should be about 8 percent more economical than the previous model. The Tiguan and Beetle should see comparable improvements.

In the U.S. the current Beetle is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol unit which churns out 168bhp connected to 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The VW Passat is powered by the same engine as the Beetle.
