Good News For Classic Car Lovers — No Ban On Vintage Cars In India
Vintage and classic cars have been exempted from the NGT ban in India.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has announced that the classic and vintage cars will be permanently exempted from the ban that affects cars that are 15 years or older than that.
Hindustan Times reports that, as per the new order, the vintage cars which comply with the Motor Vehicles Act would be allowed to ply on the roads for rallies, exhibitions and maintenance.

The bench headed by NGT Chairperson, Justice Swatanter Kumar referred to Rule 92 (2)(c) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and Section 59 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which grants an exemption to "antique or vintage" vehicles.

Before the new order was passed, all the cars which are 15 years or older and vintage cars were to be scrapped. But the ban was opposed by vintage and classic car enthusiasts and owners, saying that the cars are a historical monument.

The NGT also stated that the applicant association (Heritage Motoring Club of India) should contribute to the conservation of the environment by planting trees and providing dustbins, which will also improve the air quality, especially in Delhi.

In November 2014, NGT passed an order to ban all the vehicles which are older than 15 years. NGT also clarified that the ban on diesel vehicles older than ten years would stay in Delhi. The reason behind the ban was to curb the increasing pollution in the national capital.

With the increasing number of vehicles in the country, the pollution is rapidly rising, and the situation is getting out of hands in Delhi. So, NGT issued a ban on vehicles older than 15 years, which also affected the vintage cars. But now, NGT has exempted the ban on classic cars and also asked the vintage car owners to contribute towards conservation of the environment.
