No More Waiting At Toll Booths — New Vehicles Will Soon Sport Toll Tags
Begining August 2017, all new vehicles leaving the showrooms will be fitted with FasTags by car dealers for new car buyers.
Back in November 2016, the Government of India had asked automobile manufacturers to provide a digital identity tag on all new vehicles. This was supposed to enable electronic payment at toll plazas, ensuring seamless movement.

However, with inadequate infrastructure, it made it an unnecessary addition to the vehicle. Over 73 lakh vehicles which were already installed have not been utilised at all.

As per TOI, the government has asked all new vehicles to be retrofitted with Fastags before it comes out of the showrooms from August 2017.

The 73 lakh vehicles which were fitted with the older digital identity tags will have to be updated or replaced. As of now, banks are providing the FasTags, but now car dealers are responsible for offering the FasTags.

The FasTags costs Rs 100 and all payments can be paid electronically. The owners of older vehicles can get the FasTags installed, and it is said the installation is not a cumbersome process.

Under the new criteria, banks selling these FasTags will reach out to the automobile dealers, who will then give buyers a choice to obtain the tags provided by different banks.
