UN Urges Drivers To Slow Down To Make Roads Safer
The fourth edition of the UN Global Road Safety Week is held from May 8 to May 14, 2017. UN has issued guidelines to make the roads more safer.
Crossing the speed limits is one of the main reasons for the increase in road fatalities around the globe. Around 40 to 50 percent of drivers go over the speed limit.

To spread awareness about overspeeding and to make roads safer, Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week is held from May 8 to 14, 2017. As per studies, close to 30 percent of road accidents occur due to crossing the speed limits.

Road safety is one of the major targets of UN for different countries. A young member of a family suffering a crash will indirectly affect the economic development of society. So, the low and middle-income countries need to focus on curbing down the accidents.

The low and middle-income countries account for nearly 1.25 million road deaths every year around the world. Which also includes India, with highest road accident fatalities in the world.

To decrease the number of road fatalities by 50 percent, UN stresses on the development of infrastructure in such countries. Implementation of various regulations such as good driving practices and driver training can improve the situation.

WHO insists on strict laws for drink and drive, strict policies for issuing of driver's license and reducing the speed limits to 30km/h or 50km/h in some countries.

UN also suggests that the automobile manufacturers also have a major role in enhancing road safety. The manufacturers should develop new technologies to improve the safety of driver, passenger and pedestrians.
