DriveSpark takes a look at the cars that a green loving car person can buy in India.
April 22 is celebrated across the World as Earth Day, a day the world comes together as a whole to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The celebrations first started in 1970 and this time, DriveSpark decided to join in by listing out the cars any of our eco-warriors readers should consider buying in India.
For this list we are ignoring micro-hybrid cars as the electric motors used by them cannot drive the cars under their own power.
9. BMW i8
BMW's flagship sports car, the i8 hybrid sports car was first seen in India at the 2014 Auto Expo. A year, later, under the watchful eye of Sachin Tendulkar, the i8 finally made its way to India's roads.
With its futuristic looks, the i8 grabs eyeballs wherever it goes. Powering the BMW i8, is a hybrid system that combines an electric motor (powered by a 7.1kWh battery pack) with a 1.5-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder engine to push out 357bhp and 570Nm of torque.
The hybrid powertrain is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox The i8 sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.4 seconds onto a top speed of 250km/h.BMW claims that the i8 returns a bonkers mileage figure of 47.61km/l as per New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) testing.

Volvo XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid
The Volvo XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid is the most powerful XC90 in Volvo's lineup in India.
Powered by a 2.0-litre four cylinder that is both supercharged and turbocharged and an electric motor (paired toa 9.2kWh battery pack), the XC90 Hybrid kicks out 401bhp and 640Nm of torque which is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The XC90 will sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 225km/h. The XC90 hybrid returns a claimed mileage of 47.61km/l (NEDC).

Lexus RX450h
The newest entrant into the luxury car game in India, Lexus has two hybrid vehicles on sale. The Lexus RX450h is powered by a 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 that along with an electric motor crank out 308bhp and 335Nm of torque that is sent to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The RX450h sprints from 0-100km/h in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed of 220kmh and returns a mileage of 18.86km/l. The Lexus RX450h in two variants in India, the RX450h Luxury and RX450h F Sport.

Lexus ES300h
The second Lexus hybrid in our list, the Lexus ES300h sedan is powered by a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine that when mated to the electric motor sends 202bhp and 213Nm of torque to the front wheels through a CVT gearbox.
The Lexus ES300h sprints to 100 from a standstill in 8.8 seconds and will keep on accelerating till it tops out at 180km/h. The hybrid sedan returns a mileage of 17.85km/l.

Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius is the most recognisable name in the hybrid car world today and is considered responsible by many to be the reason why hybrid cars are so accepted in today's car market.
The fourth-generation Toyota Prius Hybrid entered India in February. Powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that is mated to an electric motor, the Prius kicks out 122bhp and 142Nm of torque which is sent to the front wheels.The Toyota Prius returns a mileage of 26.27km/l.

Honda Accord Hybrid
The Honda Accord is a very recognisable sight on Indian roads. However, any new Accord you see on the roads today will be a hybrid as the luxury sedan from Honda is now only available in hybrid form in India.
The Accord is powered by a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine which along with an electric motor combine together to kick out 212bhp while returning a mileage of 23.1km/l.

Toyota Camry Hybrid
The Toyota Camry Hybrid was the first hybrid car to be assembled in India.
Powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, the Camry Hybrid produces 158bhp and 213Nm of torque which is mated to a CVT gearbox. The Toyota Camry returns a mileage of 19.21km/l.

Mahindra eVerito
The eVerito is one of two all-electric passenger cars offered by Mahindra, which is the only car manufacturer to offer zero-emissions vehicles in India.
The eVerito is the newest electric offering from Mahindra and is powered by a72V, 3-stage AC induction motor which draws power from a 72Ah battery pack. The eVerito has a top speed of 90km/h and its battery pack gives the car a range of 110 kilometres.
The battery pack can be charged in 8 hours through a regular charger, however, a fast charger will top the battery up to 80 percent from zero in just 105 minutes.

Mahindra e2O Plus
The Reva was what kickstarted the green car movement in India. When Mahindra took over the company, they rebadged the car as the e2O. Nowadays, the electric hatchback is only available in e2O Plus (four-door) form.
The e2O Plus is powered by either a11 kWh(P4, and P6) or 16kWh (P8) battery pack which are connected to a 3-phase AC induction motor. The less powerful variant produces 25.47bhp and 70Nm of torque while the top-spec e2O Plus produces 40.14bhp and 91Nm of torque.
The less powerful version of the E2O Plus have a range of 110 kilometres (plus 5 kilometres with the revive function) and take 6 hours to charge up using a normal charger (fast charging time 75 minutes for 0-95 percent).
The most powerful e2O Plus variant has a range of 140 kilometres (plus 10km with revive) and needs 9 hours to charge with a normal charger (quick charge 90 mins for 0-95 percent).
