World car group ranking in 2016 induct the Volkswagen Group as the global leader despite the diesel gate scandal that rocked the company.

About a year ago, very few observers could have forecasted the final 2016 sales ranking of car group manufacturers in the world. Especially the diesel gate scandal rocking Volkswagen Group's brand, there was much doubt about the company's performance, having to pay heavily both financially and in sales.
However, the Volkswagen Group's financial cost had been high, under the sales level, the group managed to handle the effects of the scandal market-by-market with a spectacular year-end result, with worldwide sales of cars and light motor vehicles better than 2015. Here are the top 10 car group manufacturers for 2016 in the world.
10. Suzuki
Suzuki sold 2.85 million vehicles in the year 2016 and stood the 10th rank beating Mercedes-Benz. The Japanese automaker stood with a market share of 3.1 percent in 2016 and growth of 0.3 percent.
The company has slipped from 9th to 10th rank compared to 2015, but that is marginally. Suzuki manufacturers vehicles in most of the segment including entry-level hatchbacks to SUVs.

9. PSA
Groupe PSA is informally known as PSA, the French multinational manufacturer of automobiles sold under the Peugeot, Citroen and DS Automobiles brands. PSA is predominantly present in the European, South American and the Canadian region.
The group company sold 3.24 million units in 2016 registering a negative growth of one percent with a market share of 3.6 percent in 2016.
8. FCA
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) which sells noted brands such as Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, Maserati among others is the 8th in this list. The company sold 4.86 million units in 2016 and registered 2.5 percent increase in sales compared to 2015.
The company had a market share of 5.4 percent for the year 2016. FCA's sales was marginal; however it was able to better its ranking from 11th in 2015 to 8th in 2016.
7. Honda
The Japanese automobile manufacturer sold 4.90 million vehicles in 2016 with amarket share of 5.4 percent. This might be same compared to 8th ranked FCA, but the overall sales number was slightly higher compared to FCA.
Honda was able to fend off competition and moved up the ranking because of its outstanding performance in the European market. The company was ranked 8th in 2015 with sales of 4.5 million compared to 4.9 million in 2016. Honda is present around the world with product ranging from cars to SUVs.
6. Ford
Ford was the most hit among this list with sales of 6.29 million vehicles in 2016. The American company registered sales growth of 1.7 percent and market share of 6.9 percent. Over the period of 2016, Ford has maintained its 6th positionbut did not perform well when compared to its nearest rival, General Motors.
Ford sells vehicles around the world and has a history in automobile market of 113 years. Ford sells vehicles under the brand of Lincoln and Troller, apart from its own brand. Ford's main driver of sales comes from its pickup trucks.
5. General Motors
General Motors commonly known by ‘GM' sells vehicles under the brand of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Opel, Vauxhall among others. The American based company is a world renowned brand and sells vehicles around the world.
The company sold 7.97 million vehicles in 2016 registering a marginal increase in sales. GM currently holds market share of 8.8 percent in the world.
4. Hyundai-Kia
The South-Korean company, Hyundai holds 33 percent stake in Kia Motors together sold 8.17 million vehicles in the world. The company now holds 9 percent of the market share in the automobile industry in the world.
Founded in 2000, the company in 16 years has grown in leaps and bounds with the quality products. The company sells hatchbacks, sedans to SUVs around the globe.
3. Renault-Nissan
Renault-Nissan might be new to India; however, they have finished on the podium with sales of 8.51 million vehicles in 2016. The group has a market share of 9.4 percent and is the most significant performer on this list.
The company controls several major brands including Nissan, Renault, Infiniti, Dacia, Datsun, Renault Samsung Motors and most recently Mitsubishi. The alliance partners are the world's leading plug-in electric vehicle manufacturer.
2. Toyota
With amarket share of 10.9 percent, Toyota sold 9.94 million vehicles in 2016. The Japanese automaker lost the leadership to Volkswagen in 2016 after nearly five years.
Toyota is the world's market leader in hybrid electric vehicle sales and is considered one of the largest companies to market the mass adoption of hybrid vehicles around the world. Most notably, Toyota is known for its Prius hybrid vehicle in the segment.
1. Volkswagen
Volkswagen Group owns some of the best-known brands such as Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen. The group also owns motorcycle brand Ducati and commercial vehicles such as MAN, Scania, Neoplan and Volkswagen Commercial vehicles.
In 2016, the Volkswagen Group sold a massive 10.10 million vehicles and captured market share of 11.1 percent. It took the leadership from Toyota and as mentioned earlier, despite the diesel gate scandal, the company was able to produce more vehicles than any other car manufacturing groups in the world.
