Tata Motors Working On Electric Tiago
Indian automotive giant Tata Motors is working on an electric variant of its popular Tiago hatchback as it looks to enter the fledgeling electric car market in India which is currently dominated by Mahindra.
According to Autocar India, the electric Tiago is expected to borrow quite a lot of what was seen on the Bolt BEV prototype and could very well be the first electric Tata to hit Indian roads.
Leading the development of the new Tiago EV is Tata' UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre R&D facility which has been heading the Indian carmaker's work on all-electric powertrains for a few years now.
Using the Tiago's low-cost platform is expected to help Tata Motors offset the cost of the electric powertrain and help keep the price of the EV competitive.
Also helping to keep the price down will be subsidies from the government under the FAME scheme and the decision to keep EVs in the 12 percent tax bracket under the new GST rules.
The Tiago is currently the best-selling Tata vehicle on sale in India and is currently available with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.05-ltre diesel engine. The addition of the Tiago into the electric car market will help give customers a greater choice in a market that is currently dominated by the Mahindra.
