Tata Motors To Have More AMT Models In Future
Tata Motors will introduce AMT technology in more models to boost the sales in India.
Indian automaker Tata Motors is betting high on the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) to boost the passenger vehicle sales in the country.
According to a senior official from Tata Motors, in the future, 50 percent of the product portfolio will be equipped with AMT gearbox.
Tata Motors has recently launched the AMT technology on the mid-end variant of its best-selling hatchback, the Tiago. Apart from that, the company is also planning to introduce the AMT technology on its compact sedan, the Tigor.
The Tigor AMT is likely to be launched in the next three or four months. The upcoming compact SUV, the Nexon will be equipped with AMT gearbox before the end of the current fiscal.

Head of Marketing, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, Vivek Srivatsa said, "When we launched AMT variant of Tiago on top-end variant earlier this year, there was a substantial jump in sales of the model. Over 15 per cent of total Tiago booked today are AMT variant."
Srivatsa also said that Tata Motors is working towards making AMT technology more affordable to the customers by introducing it in the mid-range variant of the Tiago. Currently, the Tiago clocks around 5,000 units a month and has a waiting period of 15 to 40 days depending on the variant.
Speaking about company's plans to introduce the AMT in other models, Srivatsa said, "It will come in Tigor in another three to four months." Tata Motors is also expected to launch the Nexon compact SUV next month.
Srivatsa stated that the Nexon would be equipped with AMT gearbox in both the petrol and diesel engine options by the end of current fiscal. He also said that looking at the demand for the AMT technology, 50 percent of the products will have AMT in future.

The AMT gearbox has found good acceptance in India due to its ease of driving in the city, fuel efficiency and the price. A proper automatic gearbox will cost much more compared to an AMT transmission. So, Tata Motors is targeting the urban customers by offering AMT gearbox.
