Rimac's Next Hypercar Could Give The Tesla Roadster A Run For Its Money
Croatian electric supercar manufacturer Rimac's next hypercar could be the Tesla roadster's biggest rival when it arrives in 2020.
Croatian company Rimac Automobili is best known these days for producing the car that Grand Tour Host Richard Hammond crashed while filming the second series of the Amazon TV series.
However, Rimac's successor to the electric hypercar that the Hamster crashed in Switzerland may just cause Elon Musk's next Tesla Roadster a few headaches when it arrives in 2020.
Rimac's current Concept One electric hypercar is powered by four electric motors paired with a 90kWh Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide battery pack mated to four high-speed permanent magnet oil cooled motors, one on each wheel.
The Concept One kicks out 1,224hp and 1,600Nm of torque which is sent to all four wheels via a rather crazy gearbox system. Each of the motors up front are connected to single speed gearboxes while the rear motors are both connected to separate two-speed dual-clutch transmissions.
The Concept One accelerates from 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 355kph. The Concept One's battery pack delivers 1MW of power during acceleration and absorb 400kW during braking and has a range of 330 kilometres.
While this may not seem to be much, Rimac has been working on a newer, faster hypercar which is expected to arrive in the first half of 2018 that will definitely amp up the power game and production number.
According to a report by Autocar, the new hypercar known as Concept Two will have a production run of 100 cars, unlike the concept one which was limited to just 8 units (one of which has been destroyed by the smallest member of the Grand Tour, damn him.)
However, the Concept Two has big task on its hands. The 2020 Tesla Roadster has a claimed 0-60mph (96.5kph) of just 1.9 seconds and top speed in excess of 400kph with a range of 1,000km.
