PSA Group To Launch Cars In India At Competitive Prices — Swift Rival To Arrive First
PSA Group's plan for India includes premium hatchback, compact SUV and premium sedan.
The PSA Group, a French automaker that owns the Peugeot, Citroen and DS brands is targeting to bring in a series of smart cars to India.
The company will launch the first product in India by 2020. As per ET, the centre of the French car maker's entry will be an SUV-inspired hatchback that will compete in the Maruti Suzuki Swift segment.
The premium hatchback will be followed by a compact SUV and a mid-sized sedan. PSA Group has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Technologies for engineering development and sourcing support in the country to develop a portfolio of cars; the company is internally referring it as Smart Car 1, Smart Car 2 and Smart Car 3.
The cars are being designed for emerging markets, and these will be built on PSA Group's 'CMP platform', which is modular in nature and improves the commonality of parts.
While the compact SUV will be launched in India a year after the hatchback makes its entry, the third car will be rolled out a year later.
The company is looking to emulate Renault's strategy for the Indian market. PSA will make vehicles for the Indian buyers at Indian cost.
With India set to achieve new safety and emission norms post-2020, it will enable PSA to price its cars closer to market leaders Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor, which will have to update their cars to the new standards.
