New P2 Module Clutch Allows Hybrid Vehicles To Use Manual Gearbox

German component firm Schaeffler has developed a new clutch which will allow hybrid vehicles to use a manual gearbox.
The new P2 Module clutch is likely to enter production by the end of this year in China. The P2 module sits between the engine and the transmission and includes a 12kW electric motor and a pair of clutches.

A disconnect clutch will allow the engine to be decoupled from the transmission and an impact clutch is used to nullify vibrations when the engine is started. Schaeffler states that the P2 module will allow the vehicle to drive on electric power at low speeds.
The new system also allows active sailing speeds up to 50km/h. The active sailing system will utilise rolling momentum by idling or shutting down the engine and disconnecting it from the gearbox.

The P2 module is designed to work with the 48V electrical system. The P2 module can also be used to generate energy under braking and save it as electrical energy to a 48V battery. The P2 can be retrofitted on the existing vehicles.
The P2 module is manufactured to be used in Schaeffler's new E-clutch set-up. The company claims that the new clutch will save fuel by eight percent. The E-clutch comes in two variants - pedal and hydraulic and cable connection with electronic cable actuator and the standard pedal setup.

The hybrid vehicles are designed to cut fuel usage and reduce the carbon emission. Now with the use of new E-clutch, the usage of fuel will further come down and also the emission levels.
