As the year 2017 draws to a close, the automotive industry witnessed an action-packed year with several Indian and global automakers making a beeline to launch a vehicle from their portfolio.
Through the year of 2017, search for the cars and bikes on search engine giant Google were at an all-time high. Now, Google has released a list of most trending cars and bikes in 2017 in India, and there were several surprises in store.

10. Volkswagen Polo GTI:
A surprise entry in the list is Volkswagen's first hot hatch in India, the Polo GTI. The 1.8-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol inline petrol engine powers the two-door Polo GTI, churning out an impressive 189.4bhp and 250Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox, which helps the hatch sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.

9. Volvo XC60
While a hot hatch was the tenth most searched car in 2017, luxury cars were not behind. The second generation Volvo XC60 ranked ninth on the list which was launched in India in December 2017. The new XC60 is powered by a 1969cc four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine producing 233bhp and 480Nm of torque and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
8. Mercedes-Benz CLA
Launched back in December 2016, the stylish and luxurious coupe, the Mercedes CLA is available in two engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.1-litre diesel unit. The new Mercedes-Benz CLA boasts of a coefficient of drag value of just 0.25, the lowest for any production car in the world.
7. Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The Maruti Celerio was the first car to be equipped with the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gearbox and ushered in the era of AMTs in the country. The Celerio continues to be a preferred hatchback when you require an AMT equipped car. The Celerio is powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 67bhp and 90Nm of torque.

6. Toyota Etios
The capable Toyota Etios found itself at the 6th spot in the most trending cars in 2017 in India. The Etios is the most preferred cab in the country for its practicality and quality. The Toyota Etios is available in both petrol and diesel engines.

5. Maruti Suzuki Ignis
Known as the millennial car, the Maruti Ignis was launched as a premium and quirky small hatchback to impress young and urban car buyers. The Ignis is a stylish looking hatchback and is available in both petrol and diesel version and comes with the options of either a manual or an AMT gearbox.
4. Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon was one of the most-awaited compact SUV in India. With the segment riding on the popularity wave of SUVs, models such as Maruti Brezza and Ford EcoSport led the segment, with the Nexon, Tata Motors has found a solid foothold in the market. The SUV is available in both petrol and diesel version, while an AMT spec Nexon is expected to be launched in 2018.

3. Tata Hexa
Another SUV which put Tata Motors back in the reckoning in the SUV segment is the Tata Hexa. Despite being based on the old Tata Aria, the Hexa was revised with sharper and stylish design. The Tata Hexa is available only with a 2.2-litre diesel engine with two different torque output.

2. Jeep Compass
Undoubtedly the best launch of 2017 in India, the Jeep Compass created a niche for itself in the market, and it comes as no surprise that the Jeep Compass was one of the most trending cars in 2017 in India. The Compass SUV is available in both petrol and diesel models.

1. Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Maruti Swift continues to be the favourite car for Indian car buyer. The current generation Swift's production might have come to a halt, but fans are waiting with baited breath for the next-generation hatchback. The upcoming new Maruti Swift is expected to again set to the trend in the hatchback segment likes its predecessor.

The much-loved Yamaha YZF-R1 continues to be a favourite among sports bike fans across India. The Yamaha R1 with its 'crossplane' engine, short wheelbase chassis and high-tech electronics was the tenth most searched bike in 2017 in India. The YZF-R1 is powered by a 998cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin engine produces 197bhp and 112.4Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

9. Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster
Triumph debuted the Bonneville Speedmaster in India at the IBW 2017 and is essentially a practical and versatile version of the Bobber with high-spec components including brakes and suspension. Mechanically, the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster is powered by a 1200cc liquid-cooled, parallel twin unit producing 76bhp and 106Nm of torque.

Hero MotoCorp might have discontinued the Impulse, but the small adventure bike had its niche fanbase who loved the bike's agility and practicality along with an affordable price. Now, home-grown motorcycle manufacturer is looking to bring the XPulse, an upgraded Impulse with all their learnings from the Dakar Rally.
7. TVS Apache RR 310
Arguably the best launch of the year, the TVS Apache RR 310 seems to have all the ingredients to become the leading motorcycle in the premium motorcycle segment in India. The Apache RR 310 hosts the BMW-engineered 313cc engine and frame have been developed by BMW Motorrad as well. The RR 310 is priced competitively and will rival the likes of KTM RC 390 and Kawasaki Ninja 300.

6. BMW R NineT
The neo-retro motorcycle from BMW Motorrad, the R NineT might look retro, but underneath the skin, the bike has all the modern bits to be one of best retro sports bike in the country. The BMW R NineT is powered by a 1170cc engine churning out 109bhp and 116Nm of torque. BMW Motorrad has the R NinT Racer in India as well, which is take on the heritage cafe racer looks.
5. Royal Enfield 650
The biggest two-wheeler unveil of the year is indeed the Royal Enfield 650. The Royal Enfield Twins as the company refers to the bikes, is the first parallel twin powered motorcycle from the company since four decades. The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650 is expected to create a ripple in the Indian auto industry when it is launched in mid-2018.
4. Kawasaki Ninja 650
Another bike enthusiasts best is the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The new Ninja 650 was launched in India in March 2017, is sharper and with the livery of black and neon green compared to the previous model. The Ninja 650 is powered by a 649cc parallel twin engine developing 67bhp and 65.7Nm of torque.

The only true-blue cruiser on the list, the Indian Scout, is a rev-happy bike for the urban crowd. The entry-level motorcycles from Indian Motorcycle are agile as well as an easy-to-ride motorcycle. The Indian Scout is powered by a 1133cc V-Twin engine producing 98.63bhp and 97Nm of peak torque and comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Honda stunned the two-wheeler industry by launching a stylish scooter in the 125cc scooter segment, the Grazia. The scooter comes packed with features, but most of all it's arguably the best looking 125cc scooter in India.

The Suzuki Intruder is the most trending bike in 2017 in India. The fact that Indian motorcycle buyers prefer cruiser over regular commuter was reflected in the high search volume in Google for the Suzuki Intruder. The 150cc powered Intruder is priced competitively and comes loaded with features.
