Mitsubishi To Rethink India Strategy — Will The Lancer Return?
Mitsubishi is set for an overhaul in the Indian market. With the acquisition of Mitsubishi by Renault-Nissan, the company will re-evaluate its operations in the country.
Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi has been operating in the Indian market for over 20 years. But it was limited to a product-by-product technical partnership with Hindustan Motors(HM).
Hindustan Motors either builds or imports and sells specific Mitsubishi models such as Pajero, Outlander and the Lancer. The model particular collaboration impacted the updates and the introduction of new-gen models.
But with the acquisition of the Mitsubishi by Renault-Nissan alliance, the game is set to change in the Indian market. Renault-Nissan alliance boss Carlos Ghosn stated that Mitsubishi would re-evaluate its India operations.
Speaking to Autocar India, Ghosn said, "Without any doubt, India is a very big future market for any carmaker and for Mitsubishi in particular." This suggests that Mitsubishi is set for a makeover in the Indian market.
But the changes are unlikely to happen soon, as the carmaker has a lot of plans in the global market. The new products have to be designed on the alliance platform to keep the costs in check.
But the interesting fact is that Ghosn confirmed that the CMF-A platform which underpins Renault's best selling car, the Kwid, will be available to MIstubishi.
Ghosn further said, "Today you are having a Renault product (on the CMF-A platform), tomorrow you are going to have a Nissan product, but this platform will be open to Mitsubishi."
It will be interesting to see which Mitsubishi products will be introduced in the Indian market apart from the alliance models. Lancer was a successful product in India as it built a strong brand value in the market. SUVs are also company's best bet with rising demand in India.
Mitsubishi recently revealed the Ecliose Cross SUV. Check out the extensive photos of the new SUV by clicking the gallery below.
