Mercedes Planning A-Class Sedan As Compact Luxury Car Battle Heats Up
Mercedes is planning to take on the A3 and the new BMW 1 series sedan with a new sedan based on the A-Class hatchback.
German carmaker Mercedes is planning to expand its compact car lineup with a new sedan based on the A-Class that will sit between the next CLA and C-Class.

While Mercedes still has not confirmed any news about the upcoming A-Class sedan, Autocar claims that the new car will hit showrooms in 2018.

The new Mercedes A-Class sedan will draw power from the usual array of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines from Stuttgart along with updated versions of the smaller displacement engines (turbocharged 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-petrol) borrowed from the Renault/Nissan alliance.

The top spec A-Class sedan will again be the work of Merc's power crazed AMG division in the form of the next A45 which is expected to crank out 400bhp.

Hybrid powertrains are also expected to feature on the new A-Class sedan which will sit on Merc's second-generation MFA platform. All variants could sport either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 9-speed dual clutch automatic.

The new sedan will also benefit from the transverse engine layout that will free up more space inside. Passenger and luggage space is said to be almost on par with the larger C-Class, and a long wheelbase variant is also in the works for China, which is expected to host one of Merc's production facilities for the new car.
