McLaren is all set to make its return to the Indianapolis 500 after an absence of 38 years. On May 28, 2017, McLaren will field a single car powered by Honda in the 101st Indianapolis 500 race.

The McLaren Honda car will be run by Andretti Autosport team. Fernando Alonso will be behind the wheel of the Honda-powered McLaren car. The car uses the Dallara W12 chassis as the other IndyCar teams.

The McLaren Indycar race car draws power from a Honda 2.2-litre twin-turbo, V6 engine. The engine is limited to 12,000rpm as per IndyCar regulations.

The Indianapolis 500 race will take place on May 28, 2017, the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix. So, Alonso will miss the Monaco GP Formula One race.

Soon, McLaren will announce the replacement driver for Alonso to drive The Formula One car in Monaco. Indy 500 will be the only IndyCar race for Alonso this year.

Alonso said, "I'm immensely excited that I'll be racing in this year's Indy 500, with McLaren, Honda and Andretti Autosport. I've never raced an IndyCar car before, and neither have I ever driven on a super-speedway, but I'm confident that I'll get to grips with it fast."
