Indian automaker Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch more utility vehicles in the Indian market.
India's leading automaker Maruti Suzuki is working on more SUVs to be launched in the next few years. Riding high on the success of Vitara Brezza, the company wants to tap into the growing SUV segment.
ET Auto reports that Maruti Suzuki is working on a full-fledged SUV to be slotted above the Vitara Brezza to rival the likes of Tata Hexa and Mahindra XUV 500.

The company is also studying to determine the feasibility of a small SUV which is intended to be positioned below the Vitara Brezza. Managing Director, Kenichi Ayukawa said, "There are some opportunities developing in that kind of segments."

With the Indian buyers leaning towards the utility vehicles, it is a crucial segment for manufacturers. The sales of utility vehicles grew by 30 percent in the previous financial year ended March 31, 2017.

Vitara Brezza played a key role in Maruti Suzuki's double-digit growth in fiscal 2017. The compact SUV recorded a sales volume of 1,95,741units, and the company gained 38 percent share in the utility vehicle segment.

Although, the project is in its initial stage. The final decision is yet to be made on the development of the product. The latest SUV will be based on the fifth-gen C Platform and will enter production in 2020.

Maruti Suzuki will also launch an SUV-styled hatchback codenamed as Y1K set to enter the market in 2019 to take on the Renault Kwid. The firm is also studying a different architecture which could spawn two more products.
