Maruti Looking To Cease Gypsy Production — The End Of An Era?
The Gypsy has been the preferred choice of the Indian Army due to its ability to work in all weather conditions and off-road capability along with easy and low-cost maintenance.
A few months back, the Indian Army signed a contract with Tata Motors for supplying the Safari Storme that will replace the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy from the force. Maruti Suzuki is reportedly going to weed out the Gypsy from the production line.

Currently, the Indian Army will buy 3,200 Safari Storme SUVs from Tata Motors. The Gypsy was introduced by Maruti in the country three decades ago. Maruti Gypsy was the only 4x4 petrol vehicles in the country on sale.

The Gypsy has been the preferred choice of the Indian Army due to its ability to work in all weather conditions and off-road capability along with easy and low-cost maintenance. However, Maruti Suzuki did not update the Gypsy in line with modern technology evolution, which led to the newer needs from the Army and eventually the decision of replacement.

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, currently on sale, is powered by a BSIV compliant 1.3-litre engine producing 80bhp of power and 103Nm of torque. The power is sent to all four via a 4-wheel drive system.

On the other hand, the Tata Safari Storme draws power from a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 156bhp of power and 400Nm of torque. The SUV comes with 6-speed manual transmission and can be paired with an all-wheel-drive system with a low-ratio transfer case, which is useful in severe weather and dangerous road conditions.
