Mahindra Working On Electric Versions Of The Scorpio And XUV500
Mahindra is working on the electric versions of the Scorpio and XUV500.
Mahindra & Mahindra is the only automaker in the Indian market to offer electric vehicles. Now, the company is planning to electrify its popular SUVs.
MoneyControl reports that Mahindra's electric vehicle division, Mahindra Electric is working on electric versions of the Scorpio and XUV500.

To develop electric vehicles, Mahindra is planning to invest around Rs 300 crore to Rs 400 crore Mahindra Electric will be supplying electric powertrain and is looking for partners for developing the electric vehicle-related technology.

Mahindra has already introduced the electric variants of the Verito and minivan. The electric variants of the Scorpio and XUV 500 are likely to be priced higher than the diesel variants. The company has not revealed any timeframe for the launch of electric SUVs.

Currently, the Scorpio and XUV500 draws power from a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The engine on the Scorpio develops 120bhp, whereas the XUV500 engine produces 140bhp. The Scorpio is equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox. XUV500 comes with a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox.

Apart from that Mahindra is also working on the facelifted Scorpio and XUV 500 which are likely to be launched in the Indian market in 2018. The electric Scorpio and XUV 500 is likely to carry a price tag of around Rs 12 lakh and Rs 15 lakh respectively.

Mahindra is now looking to expand its electric vehicle portfolio by developing electric variants of the Scorpio and XUV 500. But the electric SUVs should come with a good driving range and at an affordable price to be successful in India.
