Mahindra Developing 48V Mild-Hybrid Technology

The new 48V mild hybrid technology is stronger than the current 12V system used by Mahindra.

Mahindra is developing new and more powerful 48V mild hybrid technology despite the high tax rate on hybrids under the new Goods and Service Tax (GST).

Mahindra & Mahindra managing director, Pawan Goenka, said, "Mahindra is working on 48V mild-hybrid technology, and will continue to do so in order to be ready with a product using this technology. Launching this product though would depend on whether there is a re-think on the taxes for hybrids. Otherwise, it will be difficult to justify the launch of such a vehicle in India."

Under the GST, the applicable taxes on Hybrid vehicles is 43 percent from the previous 30.3 percent. All hybrid vehicles attract 28 percent GST and 15 percent cess, which is also applicable on large, luxury cars as well as SUVs.

The GST on hybrid vehicles has led to an increase in prices, including models such as Maruti' Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology and Mahindra 'Intelli-Hybrid.'

With the current non-favorable environment of hybrids in India, it is possible Mahindra might be working on the new 48V mild hybrid technology for export models.

The 48V mild-hybrid system employs an additional battery unit and starter-generator to transform braking energy into electricity.

This energy, stored in the battery, can then be utilised for increasing engine performance. Also, it can be used to power a significant number of the vehicle's electric systems like the radiator fan, water pumps and electric power steering racks. Additionally, it could offer better performance and higher fuel efficiency.

DriveSpark Thinks!

While mass-market electric cars in India is still a long way to go, hybrids could be the best possible solution for the Indian auto industry to move ahead right now.
