The latest figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) have revealed that the National Highways in the Ludhiana region are the most dangerous.
According to the reports by NCRB, the number of deaths on National Highways has risen and become almost double in 2015, compared to the year 2014. These accident figures make it the most dangerous place in the north of India, after Delhi.
As many as 110 lives were lost in road accidents in and around Ludhiana, while Delhi recorded 189 deaths. Other cities in the region such as Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Srinagar recorded 55, 19, and 20 deaths respectively.
In 2015, as per road accidents in megacities of the country data, Ludhiana recorded 166 deaths on the National Highways, while Delhi recorded a whopping 652 deaths.
Ludhiana has jumped from the 30th position to the 19th position in the number of deaths on national highways among the mega cities in India. Although a top city in the North, Ludhiana has witnessed a drastic increase in the number of road accidents.
Kamaljeet Soi, a member of the Road Safety Council says, "The reason for such high number of deaths on national highways in Ludhiana is that the roads are not well designed, there is no proper road furniture like road markings as the road is still incomplete."
"There are no diversion signs, cuts are ill-planned. These roads are expressway, but are used by slow moving traffic as well. The traffic should have been homogeneous, but is heterogeneous in actual."
