Land Rover Won’t Reveal New Concept Models; Here’s Why
Land Rover has decided not to reveal any new concept models because of the Chinese copycats.
Tata Motors-owned British automaker Land Rover has stated that it will not reveal any new concept models and will directly showcase the production models.
Speaking to Autocar, Gerry McGovern, the design chief of Land Rover revealed the new development. The main reason behind this move is to stop the Chinese automakers from copying its design.

Previously, Land Rover produced the Velar SUV without showcasing the concept model before its launch. So, the future models will be directly put into production because of the notorious Chinese copycats.

Several Chinese automakers are known for copying designs of European and Japanese car manufacturers and retailing it in China as their products. And unfortunately, sometimes the copycat models outsell the originals.

But the global car makers are helpless in this matter because of the lenient copyright, trademark and patent laws of China. McGovern stated that Land Rover is nervous about revealing concept models as Chinese automakers can copy them.

One example for such instance is the China's Landwind X7 SUV. The design of the SUV is similar to that of the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover was unable to stop the Chinese automaker from manufacturing and selling the SUV in China.

The Landwind X7 SUV is much cheaper than the Range Rover Evoque which affects Land Rover as most of the buyers will prefer the copycat model rather than the original. The British automaker has sued Landwind, but the X7 continues to sell in the Chinese market.

DriveSpark Thinks!
Land Rover has decided not to show any concept models because of the Chinese copycats. Now, several other global automakers may follow the same. In the next few years, the concept models might become rare, which will reduce the Chinese copycat versions. But to eliminate the copycat models, the Chinese government should implement stringent laws to punish the offenders.
