Jeep Compass Price In India — The Biggest Steal Ever?
Jeep is set to launch the Compass SUV in India. So what can we expect for the Jeep Compass' price in India as the American Icon looks to get aggressive?
The Jeep Compass is perhaps the most heavily anticipated SUV that will go on sale in India. DriveSpark drove the Compass recently, and it proved itself worthy of the Jeep name. However, one question remains on the lips of every Jeep fan in India — What will be the price of the Jeep Compass in India?
When Jeep entered India last year, it came in with the humungous Grand Cherokee and trail bashing Wrangler. However, since both SUVs were imported into the country, the price tags were well beyond the reach of the regular Jeep fan here in India.
For the Compass, Jeep recognising the price conscious market that is India and also hoping to keep production costs down decided to make the Fiat Chrysler Group's (of which Jeep is a part) manufacturing plant at Ranjangaon, Maharashtra its hub for manufacturing the Compass for Right-hand drive markets across the world. The move also ensures that Jeep can take advantage of the government's Make In India scheme which hopes to make the country a global design and manufacturing hub.
Whatever, the manufacturing costs may be, at the end of the day, the price of the Jeep Compass is what will attract more customers towards the SUV. While there has been no official word from the American SUV icon, Jeep is expected to be extremely aggressive with the pricing of the Compass to compete in rather crowded SUV market.
Jeep Compass Price In India
So what is the price tag of the Jeep going to be? If what we've heard from the dealers is correct, then Jeep may have found the right price to appeal to the pockets of the Indian SUV buyer.
Variant | Estimated Price (ex-Showroom) |
Jeep Compass Petrol (Base Variant) | Rs 15 – 16 lakh |
Jeep Compass Diesel 4x4 (Automatic) | Rs 25 – 26 lakh |
Dealers at this time are stating an incredibly appealing price for the entry-level petrol-powered Compass of around 15 to 16 lakh ex-showroom. Also spoken in whispered terms is the price tag of the top-spec 4x4 Diesel Automatic which dealers claim will be priced around Rs 30 lakh (on road).
The low prices may seem like a boon for prospective Indian Jeep customers, but they do come at a price: cost cutting. Jeep is not bringing the entire Compass range to India at the start with the biggest omission being the Compass Trailhawk (seen above), the hardcore off-roading variant of the Compass which brings along a fifth off-road driving mode in the Selec-Terrain four-wheel drive system — Rock — along with Hill Descent Control.
Other cost-cutting measures mean that Compass for India misses out on a lot of features found on the SUV in International markets. The missing features including automatic headlamps, a sunroof and even the top-spec infotainment system is a 7.0-inch unit rather than 8.4-inch unit available outside. The infotainment system also misses out on satellite navigation.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The price of the Jeep Compass in India will determine if the new SUV is a hit or another missed opportunity. While cost-cutting measures may have stripped the Compass of some extra kit, it retains the Jeep brand and looks the part. And if the prices we are hearing are correct, it could be the biggest steal for brand-conscious buyers who have long associated the Jeep name with off-roading. The Jeep Compass, on the whole, is a compelling package which unlike the other SUVs at that price point can actually go off-road.
