The Jeep Compass has shaken up the premium SUV segment in India with its aggressive pricing. With prices starting from Rs 15.16 lakh, the Compass SUV rivals the likes of Mahindra XUV500, Tata Hexa, Hyundai Creta and probably even the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour with its 4x4 capabilities.

Team-BHP has revealed spy pictures of a Jeep Compass with 1.6-litre diesel engine being tested in India. Does that mean Jeep will launch an even more affordable Compass in India?

While the test mule of the Jeep Compass with the 1.6-litre Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine was spotted with labels specifying the United Kingdom on them, Jeep can benefit if they decide to launch the 1.6-litre diesel engine spec Compass in India.

Jeep Compass 1.6-Litre Diesel Model Spotted Testing In India

Jeep has the option to offer the Compass with the 1.6-litre diesel unit which could make the SUV cheaper by up to Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000, making the Compass even more attractive in the Indian market.

The 1.6-litre Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine does its duty in the current Maruti S-Cross which churns out 120bhp and 320Nm of torque. The engine is not a bad choice for Jeep to offer it in the Compass as this could potentially eat into sales of its competitors.

Jeep Compass 1.6-Litre Diesel Model Spotted Testing In India

Currently, the Jeep Compass is offered with both petrol and diesel engines: a 1.4-litre petrol unit and 2.0-litre diesel unit. While the petrol engine produces 160bhp and 250Nm of torque, the diesel unit develops 170bhp and 350Nm of torque.

The petrol engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the diesel unit comes married to a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
