Jaguar Land Rover believes in 20 years' time the steering wheel will be the only element of a motor car which will be under production.
Autonomous or driverless cars will evolve the motor car with many changes to its interiors especially the steering wheel, there have been companies who shown concepts from retractable steering wheels or no steering wheel at all. So how will Jaguar's designers develop the humble steering wheel for the future?
The designers at Jaguar have another idea altogether with its "connected steering wheel of the future" called Sayer. The British company feels the steering wheel will become portable and conversational in the future.
Jaguar says the 'Sayer' - the first voice-activated, artificial intelligence steering wheel that will be able to carry out hundreds of tasks and follow you from car to car.
"Imagine a future of autonomous, connected and electric cars where you don't own a single car, but instead call upon the vehicle of your choice where and when you need it," the company says. "That's a future vision Jaguar Land Rover is exploring with Sayer, the connected steering wheel that could be the only part of the car you own."
Jaguar says this connected steering wheel could be the only part of a car you actually own. Jaguar will employ the Sayer on a "Future-Type" concept vehicle that explores what we might expect in 2040 and beyond. The company named the futuristic steering wheel after Malcolm Sayer, the Jaguar designer who designed the C-Type, D-Type, and E-Type vehicles.
Jaguar is very forward thinking with the futuristic steering wheel Sayer; however, it is to be seen if the steering wheel will be even there in the future with driverless cars gaining unprecedented development. What can a steering wheel do when there is no driver to steer the wheel.
