Hyundai Verna Vs Honda City Comparison — Does The Verna Have An Edge Over The Popular City?
Comparing the new Hyundai Verna with the well established Honda City.
Hyundai unveiled the 5th generation Verna and the new sedan, in its 3rd generation in India, will compete with the likes of the popular Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid.
The previous generation Hyundai Verna was a hit among the buyers for its styling, features and creature comforts; however, over the course of time, Verna's rivals added technology and premium features, which arguably led to a slump in sales of the Verna.
Has Hyundai updated the new Verna to take on the feature rich Honda City? Let us compare the new Hyundai Verna with the Honda City to understand how they are rated regarding design, price, features, safety and specifications.

Design
The new-generation Verna looks similar to the previous generation but has fresh styling which can be seen in the new hexagonal grille, larger headlamps, fog lamps now come with chrome surrounds, sleeker taillights, and new 16-inch alloy wheels.
Also, the sedan receives projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillights, and borrows most of the design elements from the Elantra.
Inside the new Hyundai Verna, the sedan is slightly longer and wider while the height remains the same. The new Verna is one of the widest among its competitors and has the largest headroom, though its boot space is smallest amongst its rivals.
The Honda City receives a new front profile with the company's new design philosophy. The City comes with LED headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillights, as well as trunk lid spoiler.
The Honda City also resembles its previous generation model but with premium touches such as the LED lighting and DRLs.
As for the interiors of the new Honda City, the sedan has the largest boot space; however, short on headroom compared to the Hyundai Verna. Also, the Honda City has the smallest fuel tank.

Engine Specification & Gearbox
The new-generation Verna comes with a choice two engine options: 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. Hyundai has removed the 1.4-litre engine which was available in the previous generation.
The new Verna diesel engine produces a class leading 126bhp and 260Nm of torque, while the Honda City's 1.5-litre diesel engine churns out just 99bhp and 200Nm of torque.
As for the gearbox of the diesel models, the Honda City engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox only, while the Hyundai Verna comes with the option of either the 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The petrol model of the new Hyundai Verna is a 1.6-litre engine, and the 1.4-litre engine is no more available. The 1.6-litre petrol engine of the new Verna produces 121bhp and 151Nm of torque.
The Honda City 1.5-litre petrol engine pushes out just 117bhp and 145Nm of torque. The petrol engine of the Verna comes with both 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, while the Honda City petrol engines come with a 5-speed manual and a CVT gearbox.

Features
The all-new Hyundai Verna receives 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The sedan also gets an electric sunroof, cruise control, first-in-segment features such as cooled seats, hands-free boot release, projector fog lamps and eco coating.
The Honda City comes with features such the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with MirrorLink support for smartphone connectivity, an in-built navigation system, voice commands, cruise control and the automatic version comes with paddle shifters.
Both the new Verna and the City come with most of the features, but the Verna scores over City in first-in-segment features, while the City can boast of the paddle shifters.

Safety
As for the safety features of the next-generation Verna, the sedan comes with 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as well as rear parking cameras.
The safety features of the Honda City include 6-airbags and ABS, which comes standard across variants, rear parking camera and anti-theft security alarm.

Verdict
The all-new Hyundai Verna scores are slightly better than the Honda City in features and engine performance. The bigger displacement of the new Verna might be the powerful engine amongst its rivals, but there could be a compromise on its fuel efficiency.
