Official: Hyundai Kona Subcompact SUV Revealed [In Pictures]
Hyundai Kona revealed; the South Korean carmaker's first-ever global small SUV.
After months of teasers and spy pictures, Hyundai has finally revealed its subcompact SUV Kona.
With just over four metres, the Kona will sit above the Creta and below its elder siblings Tucson and Santa Fe. The Kona is expected to rival the Honda H-RV, Nissan Juke and Toyota C-HR in the global market.
The Kona along with its siblings are crucial to Hyundai's success in today's market, where buyers continue to choose utility vehicles over cars. Unlike its rivals, Hyundai is promoting the Kona's optional all-wheel drive drivetrain, an unusual option in this segment, as well as the option of a new dual-clutch gearbox and new turbocharged petrol engines.
Design
Up front, Hyundai has applied the same cascading grille seen on other models like the i30, only this time supplemented with a split LED lighting arrangement and a sleek grille that blends into the bonnet.
On the side, the Hyundai Kona wears black plastic cladding and is seamless to the design language unlike some of its competitors. The split light is seen on the rear as well. The new SUV from Hyundai benefits from the now common option of a contrasting roof, plus various wheel combinations.
Inside the cabin of the Kona, the subcompact SUV continues the company's current interior design language, with a floating infotainment display sitting atop the dashboard, compact HVAC controls and, for the first time in a Hyundai, a heads-up display.
Engine And Gearbox
Powering the Hyundai Kona are three option of powertrains. Initially, Hyundai is offering an 118bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol mill paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox which sends power to the front wheels and a more powerful 1.6-litre turbo with 175bhp mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.
A 1.6-litre diesel will be offered later in two states of tune (113 and 131bhp). The two higher powered variants will also be available with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (exclusively in the case of the petrol model).
Rather than employing the torsion beam for the rear suspension, the Kona utilises a more complex multi-link set-up, along with a system called Advanced Traction Cornering Control that improves traction and damping in bends.
The Hyundai Kona's entry-level variant is priced at £15,000 (approx. Rs 12.23 lakh) when it launches in the UK. For India, Hyundai has not revealed plans to bring it to India. But with the price tag, the Kona seems to be a lucrative model for the Indian auto industry.
