Honda Plans To Introduce Affordable Electric Cars In India
Japanese automaker is planning to launch affordable electric cars in India.
We have already reported that Japanese automaker Honda will introduce the hybrid variants of the City and Jazz in India.
Now, ETAuto reports that Honda is planning to launch affordable electric cars in the Indian market. So, it looks like, instead of directly introducing electric cars, the company will first launch hybrid models before going pure-electric.
Currently, Honda is readying an electric vehicle strategy for the Indian market which will include several electric cars to be introduced in the coming years. The company is planning to develop country-specific EVs to make sure that the cars are priced competitively.
Chief Executive of Honda India, Yoichiro Ueno said, "We feel that diffusion of battery EVs requires significant infrastructure development and overcoming other challenges, such as cruising range with batteries, affordability and consumer acceptance."

The statement from Ueno indicates that Honda will introduce the electric cars only after the charging infrastructure is in place, and till then the company is likely to launch hybrid vehicles in the country.
The first hybrid models from Honda in the Indian market is likely to be the City and the Jazz hatchback. The hybrid variants of both the models are already sold in the South East Asian markets. Both the hybrid cars are expected to be launched in India in 2019.
Honda has already announced its aggressive plans for India and aims to launch six cars in the next three years. Out of the six cars, two will be the hybrid version of the popular City sedan and the Jazz hatchback.
