Niti Ayog, headed by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has partnered with firms including Uber to study the economic and environmental impact of using private vehicles as taxis.

Currently, the taxi drivers have to pay hefty fees to obtain a commercial vehicle license. The government has ordered for a precise study for a reasonable regulatory framework for ridesharing services.
Apart from the costs incurred by taxi operators, the safety of the passengers becomes a primary concern. The government should address this issue if private cars to be allowed to run as shared taxis.

The carpooling is becoming very popular in the country. Currently, the UberPool and OlaShare account for nearly half of the rides per day. With such scenario, private cars doubling up as ride sharing taxis will be an instant hit.
