Google's Waymo Working On Self-Driving Trucks
Google's autonomous car development division, Waymo is branching off into self-driving trucks.
Google's autonomous vehicle division Waymo on Thursday (June 1) announced that it is working on developing self-driving trucks.
Waymo decision to move into the autonomous trucking sector will see it once again butt heads with Uber which has been testing self-driving trucks since acquiring Otto earlier this year.

Waymo is currently testing a single Peterbilt truck at its private track in California and is conducting manual testing on public roads as it collects data for its project.
The company aims to see autonomous trucks doing long haul deliveries withhuman drivers handling local pickup and delivery routes.

In a statement regarding the company's latest venture, a Waymo spokesperson said, "We're taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck."

Waymo's entry into the autonomous trucking segment comes just a few days after Uber fired Anthony Lewandowski, the former Waymo employee who founded Otto, and later became the head of Uber's self-driving car division.
