Is This The Beginning Of The End Of Petrol And Diesel Cars?

Environment Minister of France unveils five-year-plan to fulfil country's commitments under Paris Agreement.

Internal combustion engines are powered either by petrol or diesel and have dominated motor transport for more than a decade. Now the dominance seems to be challenged in the present era even as countries around the globle are looking to stop selling petrol and diesel cars in the near future.

France plans to end the sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2040 as part of its ambitious plan to meet its goals under the Paris climate accord.

Nicolas Hulot, the country's new ecology minister, said: "We are announcing an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040." Hulot added that the move was a "veritable revolution".

France is not the only country with an ambitious plan to eradicate internal combustion engines, other countries have floated similar ideas to meet air quality and climate change goals.

The Netherlands has announced plan to stop selling petrol, and diesel cars by 2025, some federal states of Germany are keen on a 2030 phase out, while back home, India is mulling the idea of banning the sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2030. The UK, too, has the aspiration to go all-electric or ultra low emission by 2040.

So what happens our transport mode? Many are predicting the start of electric car dominance in the transportation and could be sooner than we expected.

According to a research group in Bloomberg, electric vehicles will make up 54 percent of all light-duty vehicles sales by 2040. Bloomberg says, with the increase in demand for electric cars, global oil demand will reduce by 8m barrels a day and raise electricity consumption by 5 percent to charge all the new cars.

Tesla seems to have spearheaded the electric car revolution; however, mass-volume carmakers have already set up plans to introduce electric motors on their vehicles. Volvo recently said that by 2019, the company would make only fully electric or hybrid cars.
