Formula One has launched an eSports world championship series which will be run from September to November 2017.
The new Formula One eSports Series is a collaboration with F1 game developer Codemasters and Gfinity, an expert in events and competitions.
The eSports Series will be held in three stages. The virtual championship will begin with qualification events in September to determine the 40 fastest drivers on PlayStation4, Xbox One and Windows PC platforms.
Live semi-finals will be held at London's Gfinity Arena from October 10 to 11, 2017. Top 20 drivers will be going on to the three-race finals at the Yas Marina race track in Abu Dhabi from November 24 to 25, 2017.
The maiden eSports world champion will automatically qualify for the 2018 semi-finals. In a statement, Formula One Managing Director, Sean Bratches said that the new series is an amazing opportunity for their business.
US-based Liberty Media, which took over Formula One has targeted gaming to grow its revenue and to connect with the young audience. McLaren Formula One team has also launched a similar virtual series, the ‘World's Fastest Gamer' to recruit a simulator driver.
Through the Formula One eSports championship, the fans can virtually participate in the top tier of the single seater racing series. The simulation level of the modern F1 game will test the participants as the real drivers face it on the race track.
