US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened the car companies to manufacture their cars in the US or else the automakers have to face heavy taxes. Despite this condition, Ford will go ahead with its plan of exporting India-made EcoSport to US.
Ford has stated that this move is part of a ‘broader business decision, including several parameters and costs'. In November 2016, the US automaker stated that it will export EcoSport manufactured at Chennai plant from 2018.
In an interview with TOI, Interim MD and President of Ford India, Anurag Mehrotra said, "Our plans are on target. India is one of the six global locations where EcoSport is manufactured with same quality parameters for more than 100 markets worldwide."
Earlier this month Ford had terminated a planned Mexican car manufacturing plant and added 700 new jobs in the US after being criticised by Trump.
Mehrotra stated that Ford is ‘encouraged' that Trump and the new Congress is pursuing new policies that will help boost US competitiveness. He said that the company is looking forward to work with US leaders to support the economy and jobs in US.
Speaking about the cars manufactered in India, he said that the manufacturing plants in the country are being used to produce the cars for the global markets.
He further said, "Ford is proud to be making in India, for India and the world. We continue to stay committed to position India as a centre of manufacturing excellence with products exported to more than 50 markets across the globe."
