However, that has changed with the launch of the 2017 Ford EcoSport. Ford has given the EcoSport a comprehensive makeover both with the design, features as well as a new petrol engine. But is that enough to take on one of the highest-selling SUV, the Maruti Brezza?

Design

The 2017 Ford EcoSport has received significant design change to its front grille. The old split grille has been replaced by a smaller version of the one seen in the Endeavour. The new grille features two horizontal slats garnished in chrome.

Along with the raised hood and the new grille, the 2017 EcoSport looks more muscular and chunky compared to the previous model.

On the side, the new EcoSport facelift's design remains the same except for new 17-inch alloy wheels over the 16-inch wheels seen in the previous version and revised roof rails. At the rear, Ford has reworked the bumper and has retained the tailgate-mounted spare wheel especially for India.

The Maruti Brezza feels boxy compared the new EcoSport, but the Brezza looks butch and proportionate and does not look like a shrunken SUV. The front features a single slat chrome garnished grille flanked by projector headlamps with integrated DRLs.

On the side, the Maruti Brezza's design lines are simple and straight and Maruti has designed the Brezza keeping an SUV design language rather than create their version of a compact SUV.

At the rear, the Maruti Brezza features small angular taillights and large chromed-out strip that has the words 'Vitara Brezza' engraved on it. The rear profile of the Brezza is reminiscent of a popular German carmaker's SUV design language.

On the inside, the 2017 EcoSport gets new dashboard design and now, houses a floating touchscreen infotainment system. The EcoSport offers an all-black interior which looks premium and sporty and leather seats are offered on the top-trim.

The Maruti Brezza also offers black dashboard along, but with chrome garnish on the AC vents among others. The Brezza misses out on the leather seats but does feature touchscreen infotainment system.

The Ford EcoSport feels more upmarket at the same time offers better interior equipment compared to the Maruti Brezza.

Features

The top-trim Ford EcoSport gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the mid-variants receive a 6.5-inch touchscreen unit. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with navigation connected via mobile phone. The company also offers its SYNC 3 connectivity suite; there are also two USB ports.

The Maruti Brezza features touchscreen infotainment as well andis compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which the new EcoSport misses out. The Brezza also comes with in-built navigation, reverse parking camera, and sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, start-stop button, and a whole lot of features.

Engine Specifications & Gearbox

As the Maruti Brezza is available only with a diesel engine, we will compare the new EcoSport and Brezza diesel models. Ford has continued with the 1.5-litre diesel engine which powered the previous model. The unit develops 97bhp and 200Nm of torque which comes coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Maruti Brezza is powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine producing 89bhp and 200Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The new Ford EcoSport has the edge over the Maruti Brezza with better power output.

Safety

Both the new EcoSport and the Brezza get dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard fitment across all variants, though the top-variant of the EcoSport comes with six airbags.

Also, all the new EcoSport models, except for the base variant, get Ford's emergency assist system. The Ford emergency assist system calls the emergency services automatically in case of an accident.

On the base model, both the EcoSport and the Brezza are balanced; however, the top-variant EcoSport feels a lot safer with six airbags.

Price

Ford has not touched the pricing of the 2017 Ford EcoSport compared to the outgoing model. While the base variant is priced competitively with the Brezza, the top-spec EcoSport is dearer by nearly Rs 1 lakh.

Verdict

The 2017 EcoSport looks refreshed and in sync with the modern times with chunky and muscular design. The Maruti Brezza does not lose out to the EcoSport regarding styling, but the EcoSport has a very slight edge over the Brezza.

Regarding equipment and features, both are balanced with excellent features. The only aspect where the new EcoSport scored over the Brezza is the engine; the EcoSport is a lot more powerful compared to the Brezza.

That said, Maruti Suzuki's established after sales network and spares have always scored better compared to its rivals in India.
