English Replaces Hindi On Highway Milestones

National Highway Authority of India has replaced the names of places from Hindi to English on highway milestones. The national highways passing through northern districts of Tamil Nadu gets English names on the milestones.

After a lot of pressure from several political parties in Tamil Nadu, NHAI has come to this decision. The English markings on the milestone were found again along Vellore New Stand and Katpadi Railway Station on NH 75.

After NHAI had decided to replace English scripts with Hindi on the milestones along the NH 75 and 77, there was a stir among the locals and political parties.

Leaders of the political parties in Tamil Nadu called it as an attempt by the Union government to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu. The leaders also stated that they would launch a state-wide protest opposing the decision.

With the growing tension over the issue, NHAI issued instructions to erase Hindi scripts on the highway milestones. Hindi markings on the milestones of NH 75 has been erased and replaced with English.

As per sources of NHAI, the process of marking Hindi scripts on milestones had been carried out along the NH 77 and NH 75 since a month. However, the process was stalled with the strong protests in Tamil Nadu.
