Cummins Unveils Electric Heavy-Duty Truck
Cummins has revealed its first all-electric truck concept named as Aeos.
American engine manufacturer Cummins has revealed its first all-electric truck concept named as Aeos. The company known for its diesel engines has beaten Tesla, which is also planning to unveil an electric truck.
Cummins' electric truck is a concept model, but the company states that if not the truck, at least the powertrain will make it to production by the end of 2020. The concept is designed and developed by engineering firm Roush.
The Urban Hauler Tractor concept is a fully electric class 7 truck which is capable of hauling a 22-tonne trailer, the truck itself weighs 9 tonnes. Cummins states that the weight of the electric drivetrain including the battery is similar to a 12-litre diesel engine.
The electric truck is equipped with a 140kW battery pack which delivers a driving range of around 161km. These figures make it an ideal truck for short deliveries. Cummins is also developing a long-range version with a range of 480km by installing a diesel engine.

Cummins is also planning to use regenerative braking and solar panels on the roof of the trailer to further extend the range of the electric truck. The designers have also tried to make the truck as aerodynamic as possible to reduce drag.
Cummins aims to use the electric truck concept to learn about the potential of the electric powertrains in the commercial vehicle segment. The company plans to make radical technological advancements in the coming years.
American electric vehicle maker Tesla is also planning to reveal its electric truck in September. As per reports, the truck is likely to have a range of around 320km to 480km. Daimler is also working on zero emission trucks and vans.
DriveSpark Thinks!
With the stricter emission norms set to be implemented in the coming years, the electric trucks will be a perfect solution to prevent the pollution from big diesel engines. But at the same time, the electric trucks should also be economically feasible.
