The year 2017 has witnessed many ups and downs in the Indian automobile industry. There were some significant car and bike launches and also several changes in the market trends. Along with that, we will also bid goodbye to some of the cars which were sold in the country for quite some time.

In 2017, we witnessed major automakers pulling the plugs of some important models in India due to several reasons. So, here we bring you the list of cars which were discontinued in 2017.

Maruti Ritz

Maruti Suzuki launched the Ritz hatchback in India in 2009 and was branded as an affordable alternative to the best-selling Swift. It was a popular model when it was launched, but as the years passed, the design started ageing. Maruti Suzuki also brought in a slew of new cars, and finally, in 2017 the automaker decided to pull the plugs of the Ritz in India after eight years since its launch.

Hyundai i10

South Korean car maker Hyundai launched the i10 hatchback in India in 2007. In 2013, the automaker launched the Grand i10 which was expected to replace the i10, but Hyundai continued the retail the i10. In March 2017, Hyundai decided to stop the sales of the i10 as the demand for the entry-level hatchback was rapidly declining.

Renault Pulse

French automaker Renault introduced the Pulse hatchback in India in 2012, and it was a slightly altered version of the Nissan Micra. The Pulse failed to capture the Indian market and continued to sell in poor numbers. But in 2017 Renault decided to discontinue the hatchback to make way for the new models.

Chevrolet Beat

One of the major happenings of 2017 was General Motors' exit from the Indian market. The American carmaker shut shop in India in 2017 and it also saw the discontinuation of some popular models. One of them was the Beat hatchback.

Chevrolet Beat was launched in the Indian market in 2010 and featured a funky design and brought in some segment-first features. The car was doing quite well in the market, and the company was also planning to launch the 2017 iteration of the hatchback. But the unexpected exit of General Motors from India, forced Chevrolet to discontinue the Beat in 2017.

Renault Scala

Along with the Pulse hatchback, Renault also launched the Scala sedan in India in 2012. The Scala was a rebadged version of the Nissan Sunny, and most of the mechanical components remained the same. Similar to Pulse, the Scala did not perform well in the Indian market. And finally, in October 2017, the French automaker discontinued the sedan in India.

Chevrolet Cruze

Chevrolet introduced its most powerful sedan, the Cruze in India in 2009. And since then, the manufacturer has updated the sedan with a new design and engine options. The Cruze was powerful and boasted butch look of a big car and was also priced reasonably. It was a popular car among performance car enthusiasts. But in 2017, with the exit of General Motors, we had to bid goodbye to Cruze as well.

Skoda Yeti

Czech automaker Skoda launched its first SUV in India, the Yeti in 2010. Overall, the Yeti was an excellent package for its price and offered decent on and off-road capabilities. But the SUV failed to garner good sales volume in the country. The reason behind this was its compact size and the price which did not make sense for its size. Skoda also updated the SUV with a facelifted version, but in May 2017, the Yeti was discontinued in India.

Renault Koleos

Renault India launched the Koleos SUV in India in 2011 as a Semi Knocked Down (SKD) unit. The SUV came to India with all the bells and whistles and was priced over Rs 20 lakh. Due to its high price, the SUV did not sell as expected by the company. Finally in 2017, along with the Scala and the Pulse, Renault also discontinued the Koleos in India to make way for new products.

Hyundai Santa Fe

South Korean automaker Hyundai launched its flagship SUV, the Santa Fe in the Indian market in 2010. Later in 2014, the automaker also introduced the updated version of the SUV. With a price tag of over Rs 30 lakh, it rivalled some of the more modern SUVs in the market. With the sales depleting and the design ageing, Hyundai finally decided to pull the plugs of the Santa Fe in 2017.

Tata Safari Dicor

Home-grown automaker Tata Motors launched the Safari SUV back in 1998, and it was a hit in the Indian market. Since then the company has been updating the SUV before discontinuing it in 2017.Tata Motors had also launched the new Safari Storme in 2012, but went on to retail the Dicor till 2017. With new products planned for 2018, Tata Motors finally discontinued the Safari Dicor.

Honda Mobilio

Japanese automaker Honda launched its first MPV, the Mobilio in India in 2014 with high expectations. But the seven-seater vehicle did not click in the Indian market. The main reasons behind its failure were its looks, and the entry-level trim lacked features. With rivals like Maruti and Toyota, the Mobilio had a tough time in the country. In July 2017, Honda discontinued the Mobilio to make way for new products such as the WR-V.

Maruti Swift

The year 2017 will see the end of second-gen Swift in the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch of the new third-gen Swift in India, which is expected to happen in February 2018. The automaker has already stopped the production of the current-gen Swift, and the dealers are clearing stocks. To make way for the new 2018 model, we have to bid goodbye to one of the most successful cars in India, which is currently in its second-gen avatar.

Maruti Suzuki launched the extended version of the Swift christened as Swift Dzire in India in 2008. The compact sedan was a successful product in the Indian market with its affordable price tag and features. In 2012, the automaker introduced the second-gen model with new engine options.
