Indian Government Bans Car & SUV Crash Guard — Disadvantages Of The Macho Looking Accessory
Cars & SUV Crash Guard Banned By Indian Govt
In a recent letter to the transport commissioners of all states of India, the Indian government's Ministry of Highways and Road Transport (MORTH) has issued a notification to ban all crash guards or commonly known as bull-bars on cars and SUVs.
The ministry has also issued a strict warning that action will be taken against unauthorised fitment of crash guard/ bull bars on motor vehicles under the Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Also, penalties will be imposed under Section 190 and 191 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Many car owners fit crash guard to their vehicle with the impression that it will avoid massive damage to their vehicles, while many also install it for its macho look.
The car crash guard or bull bars mount directly to the frame or chassis of the vehicle, and in case of an accident, your vehicle can suffer severe damages, and even the occupants sustain injuries. Let us understand the disadvantages of a car bumper crash guard on cars and SUVs.
Bumper Crash Guard And Airbags
By fitting a car crash guard or a bull-bar on vehicles which are equipped with airbags may prevent the airbags from deploying during an accident. In these cases, occupants might suffer injuries.
Ineffective Crumple Zones
Since the bull bars/ crash guard are mounted to the chassis, the latter might sustain damages and could prevent crumple zones of the car.
Crumple zones of the car or SUVs protect drivers and passengers in frontal, rear and offset crashes by absorbing collision energy. The crumple zones helpthe vehicle absorbs the force of the accident and not the occupants of the vehicle.
Car Crash Guard & Its Effect On Pedestrians
The bull bars can grievously injure pedestrians in case of an accident or even a possibility of loss of life. Modern cars are designed with pedestrians safety taken into account, and these crash guard or bull bars might hinder the effectiveness of the design of the car.
Low Mileage
Car crash guards or bull bars made of steel can increase the weight of the vehicle, in some cases, they weigh up to 50kg, can affect the mileage of the car or SUV. This will eventually lead to the lower performance of the vehicle.
DriveSpark Thinks!
While bull bars and bumper crash guard add a macho and robust look, the car crash guard is mostly an aftermarket product and do not have the guarantee or the backing of the car manufacturer.
So if you have one fitted to your car or SUV, it is advisable that you remove them to avoid damages to your car as well as penalties by the RTO and the traffic police department.
