BMW Overtakes Audi In Luxury Car Sales In India
BMW has outpaced its fellow German competitor Audi in the luxury car segment in India. Audi has slipped to third position in the luxury car sales in the country.
German automaker BMW has outpaced Audi in the luxury car segment in India. With the slumping sales figures, Audi has slipped to the third position.

BMW recorded a growth of 14 percent, whereas Audi's sales declined by 30 percent in 2016. Market leader Mercedes-Benz has maintained its top position in the luxury car segment in the country.

Head of Audi India, Rahil Ansari declined to confirm the sales figures but agreed that 2016 was a challenging year for the company. He said, "Although 2016 was a challenging year in general for the industry, we utilised this period to consolidate our business in India."

On the other hand, BMW made a gradual progress in the country to revive its fortunes. Previously a market leader, the company lost its hold on the market over the past few years. But BMW made its comeback in 2016.

President of BMW India, Frank Schloeder said, "2016 has not been an easy year for the automotive industry and that applies equally to BMW Group India. Despite a challenging business environment, BMW Group India has increased sales and market share."

Segment leader Mercedes-Benz sold 13,231 units in India. BMW and Audi managed to sell 7,861 units and 7,742 units respectively. To boost sales, Audi plans to launch ten models in 2017.
