German automaker BMW has teased the i8 Roadster, this time in a new video. The newly released video reveals the drop-top variant of the plug-in hybrid in a camouflaged livery.
The new BMW i8 Roadster will get all the technical and cosmetic updates of the upcoming i8 facelift. Initially, it was unveiled as the i8 Spyder, but it will be retailed under the Roadster moniker.
The exterior dimensions of the i8 Roadster are identical to the 4-seater coupe variant of the car. The Roadster will also benefit from the revised chassis of the facelifted i8 which will boost the performance of the car.
The i8 Roadster feature frameless butterfly doors and the rear end is redesigned to accommodate the folding roof. Prominent humps can be noticed at the rear which will hold the soft-top roof.
The i8 Roadster will utilise the existing eDrive system comprising of a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and twin electric motors. The i8 facelift will receive an improved lithium-ion battery which will deliver a pure electric range of 50km.
The new BMW i8 Roadster is expected to make its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Apart from the soft top and revised chassis and powertrain, rest of the proportions of the car are identical to its coupe counterpart.
The drop-top version of the i8 coupe was first revealed as the i8 Spyder concept model. After a long gap, BMW has teased the production model of the plug-in hybrid. On the design front, the car is identical to the i8, except for the folding roof. The i8 Roadster will also benefit from the technical updates on the facelifted i8.
