BMW To Reveal Electric 3 Series — Wants To Take On Tesla
BMW is looking to introduce an electric version of its popular 3 Series in September 2017.
BMW wants to fend off Tesla in the electric car segment, and it will position its most popular 3 Series when the Bavarian luxury carmaker reveals the electric 3 Series in September 2017.
The German automaker will unveil the electric 3 Series at the IAA Show in Frankfurt in September and will compete with the upcoming Tesla Model 3.
The electric 3 Series will boast of 248 miles (400km) of range and will be priced in the range of the Model 3. The news arrives just months after BMW CEO Harald Krueger stated that the company would be making a push toward more electrification and connected features.
The BMW 3 Series is a popular model for the carmaker, so it makes sense to electrify the sedan; however, what is more, surprising is that we didn't expect it to come so soon. Tesla Model 3 is set to arrive in September, and this could have prompted BMW to hasten its electric offering in the mass-volume segment.
While BMW already has the plug-in hybrid i8 supercar, and the compact i3 is available as a pure EV, the electric 3 Series will position BMW in the mass-market segment.

BMW has the expertise and production facility around the globe and can reach out many customers, while Tesla is mainly present in the U.S and a new plant is coming up in China. If BMW can get the strategy right regarding pricing and infrastructure for charging, then BMW could have a winner in its hand.
