Speed Governors Now Mandatory In Bihar: State Transport Department
Bihar has made speed governors mandatory for commercial vehicles and below is the detailed information.
The State Transport Department of Bihar has made speed governors mandatory for all commercial vehicles in the state registered on or before October 1, 2017.
Commercial vehicle manufacturers are required to install these devices on all new vehicles as per recent directives of the Supreme Court.

As the name suggests, speed governors limit a vehicle's speed. The Apex court had issued a guideline for installation of speed governors on all commercial vehicles, back in 2002.

State governments of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, and Maharashtra have already issued separate notifications for making speed governors mandatory for commercial vehicles.

As per order of the Bihar Transport Department, a fresh Fitness Certificate (FC) will have to be procured from the respective district RTO after installing the speed governor. As per a notification issued by the state government in April, School buses will be restricted to 40km/h, and dump trucks will be restricted to 60km/h.

Speed governors for existing vehicles will be fit by agencies authorised by the Automotive Research Association of India, Central Institute of Road Transport, International Centre for Automotive Technology or Vehicle Research and Development Establishment.
