Bentley has revealed that its first all-electric car would be sportscar that would be launched as early as 2019. The news was revealed to Autocar UK during the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The electric two-seater sports car was picked by the company over an SUV as the fifth model in the British marque's lineup. The upcoming electric sportscar will be based on the EXP12 Speed 6e concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show.
Speaking to Autocar, Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley's boss said, "What I can say is that a small SUV is no longer in the scheme. We're favouring a car with a fully electric powertrain. We intend to be the leader in electrification in the luxury segment. We see that it fits into the Bentley scheme - low rev torque with seamless acceleration."
The concept car, the EXP12 Speed 6e that was showcased during the Geneva Motor Show had an electric engine that promised a range of 480km and had four-wheel-drive.
During the Frankfurt Motor Show, Durheimer also confirmed that the carmaker would offer three plug-in hybrid models, the Bentayga V6 plug-in hybrid that will arrive first, followed by the Continental and the Flying Spur.
Most carmakers are concentrating on electric vehicles, and no doubt, Bentley is following the same trend in an attempt to capture the market. With the introduction of a new all-electric sportscar, Bentley has taken the electric car game to a new level.
