Apple is leasing Lexus RX450h sport-utility vehicles from Hertz's Donlen fleet-management unit, indicated by the documents released recently by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Apple has installed its self-driving car software into six vehicles that it has been testing and driving for the past year, the report said, though it did not disclose if those six vehicles were part of licensing agreement between Apple and Hertz.
The news echoes a similar deal announced between the self-driving car unit of Google parent Alphabet and rental car company Avis Budget Group to offer support and maintenance services for its fleet of autonomous vehicles.

Apple's car project, which is known as Project Titan internally, has endured its own problems after spiralling costs and headcount. The project concentrates on developing an autonomous driving system, rather than developing a whole car.
CEO Tim Cook confirmed that such a system was the centre of Apple's automotive efforts in an interview with Bloomberg Television earlier this month.

DriveSpark Thinks!
With Alphabet's Waymo partnering Avis, it does not come as a surprise that Apple is collaborating with Hertz. The collaboration between technology giants and fleet car service providers heralds a new future where we can witness taxis ferrying customers without any human intervention to drive the car.
