A recent debate about the need to conduct background checks of driver hired by cab operators mandatory has thrown a new twist. Cab aggregators say that it is not mandatory for police verification of taxi drivers in Tamil Nadu (TN) unlike states like Karnataka or West Bengal.
The cab aggregators said that Tamil Nadu does not have an 'On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregator Rules' which makes the police verification of drivers optional. Ola said that before it hires a taxi driver, it verifies the documents and certificates provided by government departments.
Ola also said that even though it is not required in the TN they still verify all documents and certificates before hiring them and the veracity of the documents lies with the government agency issuing them.
The Chennai police meanwhile held a meeting in this regard with the cab aggregators and have told them that it is mandatory to conduct background checks of the drivers they are hiring. They have also asked to install GPS in the cars and check the condition of the cabs at regular intervals, install panic button near the passenger's seat and explain how to operate them.
The police further said that drivers should be provided with identity cards and should wear it during the operating time and not allow any stranger or friends to alight the car when the trip in on.
