Maharashtra Government Wants License Plates In Marathi When In The State
Diwakar Raote, State Minister of Transport believes that regional license plates should be allowed. He explains that if a vehicle is not leaving it should adorn local license plates. State Minister of Transport wants vehicles in Maharashtra to adorn license plates in Marathi.
Previously, Nitin Gadkari, Union Transport Minister, wanted vehicles in Maharashtra to sport Devanagari fonts. Central Government intervened and made it clear that only English and Marathi license plates can be used in Maharashtra.
Currently, license plates in Maharashtra are in English numerals and alphabets. Now Diwakar Raote wants license plates to be in Marathi only. The concerned department has been contacted and clarification is expected soon.
As of now, traffic officials fine individuals sporting a license plate in Marathi. It is unclear if the Central Government will allow the sole use of Marathi license plates in Maharashtra. Will vehicle owners have to carry two license plates, one for city use, while the other will be for traveling outside the state?
